Teledyn.comBone Marrow Registry~~~Message from a friend. Please Think of Taking the Test, it's easyI know that this post does not pertain to the socio-political goings on at Sauble, BUT, I thought I would forward this message on, as I could not figure out how to do it on facecrack. I put it on my personal blog as well. I was not aware of the fact that an at home test was available. It may benefit someone in the SBP area, or anywhere. Think about it. A friend's father was diagnosed with leukemia, and the test is easy, just a few swabs of your mouth that you can do at home to see if you are a match for his father, or anyone out there suffering with the disease. Thanks, Lisa Bone Marrow Registry~~~Message from a friend. Please Think of Taking the Test, it's easy Categories: Teledyn.com
Tourism SufferingSeems like everyone has a take on what has happened to the Tourist Trade this season. I did a straw poll and WEATHER and the COST OF FUEL seem to be far more dastardly than the pittance for parking fees. People are far less willing to chance bad weather reports because of the huge investment to fill their gas tanks should the weather actually be as bad as the weather man predicts. I think it would be fair to BLAME THE WEATHER MAN for such poor turn out. Maybe the high cost of stuffing the kids' mouths with exorbantly expensive tube steaks and other fast food slop might also contribute to the problem. It remains a problem when you can park for a day for less than the price of a hot dog and fries. Can't remember the last time I could afford a hot dog at Sauble...I think I bought it at Marge's. Whoa ... CLEAR Garbage Bags?I've heard of Transparency in Government, but this is a bit of too much to comprehend. Is this a joke? They are actually going to pick and choose at the curb (I don't have a curb, but you know what I mean) as to is this is or is this ain't the sort of garbage they want? Residential trash in South Bruce Peninsula may have to go out in clear plastic bags starting in January. That's to help municipal officials face both a looming shortage of dump space and the region's worst recycling record. Residents diverted just 21 per cent of South Bruce Peninsula's trash from waste disposal through recycling in 2007. [ SBP May Require Clear Trash Bags ] read more »Categories: Teledyn.com
The Shape of MusicLet me put that another way: Do you like music? Because, inescapably, they are the same question, and the 'why' of that riddle has perplexed natural philosophers and musicians for at least 3 millenia. Of course our mathematics cannot really describe nature, but it is tantalizingly curious that nature should be even approximately describable by our humble equations, and for those curious about that "unknowing exercise of our mathematical faculties" we call 'music', Seed offers an intro article by Dmitri Tymoczko, discoverer of the bold new math of music, a short article one might call A Young Person's Guide to the Orbifold Quotient Space Theory of Music. Read carefully, there will be an exam later ... read more » Categories: Teledyn.com

Got Jobs?Just a reminder, in case you've got spare tasks here and there, there's today even more folks out there waking up to community un-engagement. In this latest round of "loosing the ballast", it is nearly a quarter of the Owen Sound plant -- GM may not know this, but we do: The secret of a happy and productive society is having a gainfully engaged and 100% involved membership :) Tenneco Canada Inc. workers learned Monday the company will lay off 104 of its 524 workers in September as part of a permanent staff reduction at the plant. It says the move is a direct result of GM cuts announced last month. The facility assembles shocks for a range of GM small pickups and SUVs. The vast majority of the layoffs are manufacturing jobs. What Planet is This?I had a long talk with a festival promoter today. He really wants us on his bill, but, y'see, there's a basic problem here: he offers that we "make our money" off "exposure to a tourist audience" which is fine and cool but we ain't got nuthin' t' sell! -- after probably an hour trying to explain the anthropological imperative of the community dynamics of a grounded music divest of status strata and legality ornamentation, I'm not certain I was any closer. "ok, ok" he says, and we agree because its a charitable cause but in the next breath he asks if we'd like to play a dinner club. What I should have said was "Only if they stop eating, paint their faces and dance a dervish around the burning buffet tables. But I didn't. read more » Categories: Teledyn.com

Measuring the Mushroom MagicLast weekend the press reports told of a young man our local long-weekend police gates arrested and subsequently probationed for carrying a chest-pocket amount of this fungi. I'm sleeping so much better now. Absolutely, we don't mind you kids swarming off on bleary-eyed havoc sprees or getting into piss-drunk mass-brawl public knife fights or even stress tensored adults wound tight like the coil of a rifle, them sort is just fine by our local mores and stuff we understand and expect, but dag-blast it, the last thing we need around here is folks like his sort: "... more than 60 percent of subjects described the effects of psilocybin in ways that met criteria for a 'full mystical experience' as measured by established psychological scales. One third said the experience was the single most spiritually significant of their lifetimes; and more than two-thirds rated it among their five most meaningful and spiritually significant." Mad about ParkingAs we were walking down to the beach, we heard a number of people bitching about having to pay for parking at a beach that "belongs" to everyone. I stopped to talk to one of the gentlemen who had just flicked his cigarette into the dunes. I jawed at him about how poorly people have been treating the beach. People leave garbage, diapers, bottles and bits of their visit strewn all along the beach and dunes. I also suggested that the parking probably didn't even cover half the cost of beach upkeep. He went on to say that "Friends of Sauble" should do a better job of cleanup and mumbled something about tham getting paid all of that money and not really earning it. I reminded him that "Friends" was a volunteer group and it was not their responsibility to pick up after slobs and ignorant beach users. I also pointed out to him how inconsiderate it was of him to throw his old butts into the dunes. read more »Categories: Teledyn.com
Picnic anyone? As we all know, that's not an option this year at Sauble. There's the tables out at the North Beach falls provincial park, and that's it for places to host family mealtime gatherings or just stop on a cycle route for a lunchbox snack. Once upon a time that spot would have been Bannister Park, central, complete with playground, rain-shelter/band-space and even almost washrooms, but that's all on the fast track to being a paved paradise put-up-a parking lot now. But all is not lost. It seems someone other than me noticed what we lost when we tore down Bannister's legacy read more »Categories: Teledyn.com

Visiting the Dymaxion WorldsSo many years later, and y'know, the jury is still scratching their heads over the man who called himself Guinea Pig B and guided his transformation through a simple self-query, "If the fate of humanity depended on what I did, what would I do?" Some still call him an expert midway barker and a master of self-promotion, they call him 'amateur', 'naive', 'dreamer', 'hoaxster' and 'charlatan' even, but there's one thing about the man Time called "America's Friendly Genius": For a nearly-blind man, he saw the world with incredible clarity, not only for what it was, but for what it could, for what could be done, starting now, and given only the small efforts of nearly-blind, nearly peniless, nearly alone and unknown personal failures such as himself. read more » Categories: Teledyn.com

New Feature: The SBPersonalized Home PageHave you ever wished there was just one webpage where you could get everything in a glance and then get on with whatever else you were doing? When I sit down here at my desk, I check Facebook, I check my twitter feed, my news feed, I check the weather, the local news and I check up on the scuttlebutt 'round the SBP, and that was a lot of webpages to flip through. Now, thanks to GoogleApps, I can do all this and more all at once, all woven into one easy portal page readable from anywhere read more »Categories: Teledyn.com
Gilbert cleared in auditAn article in today's (June 27, 2008) Sun Times states that Mayor Gilbert "has been cleared of accusations she erroneously reported her election expenses". I wonder how much this audit cost you and I as taxpayers? It is my opinion that Carl Noble and John Close (the sore losers) should have to reimburse the municipality for this expense incurred because of their frivolous accusations! Categories: Teledyn.com
